CHAPTER 17
MATTHEW
When Blake left on his road trip, heâd given Matthew a key to his apartment. It felt like a declaration. Blake trusted him, and cared about him. He knew Matthew didnât want to be at his dadâs place, and was generous enough to make sure Matthew could be somewhere he wanted to be.
They were boyfriends now. It was a relationship level Matthew hadnât experienced yet. And that level came with a key. Plus, this meant he got to sleep in Blakeâs bed and use his laundry detergent.
The first couple of days had been fairly straightforward. He brought his computer and a few of his things over from his dadâs place and idly started job hunting. Not to appease his dad, but because heâd secretly quit his serving job in order to spend All-Star Break with Blake. His boss couldnât give him the whole week off, and he couldnât imagine having to do endless diet Coke refills for eleven hours straight when Blake was lying in his bed. So heâd cut his losses.
Matthew had a list of excuses. He was young, and whatever was happening with Blake was new and exciting. The job didnât pay very well. It wasnât what he wanted to do with his life (though he wasnât sure exactly what that was). He was still getting a pity allowance from his mom.
The problem wasnât that he needed the money, or that he was struggling to find a position in his field of choice. It was more that it embarrassed him to admit to Blake that he was still a fuckup in his mid-twenties who was living off his parents and didnât have any actual life goals.
Blake had his dream job that he had been working toward since he was a child. Matthewâs mom was a consultant. His dad, well, whatever, but he was working in his industry and making a lot of money. His brothers both easily fell into real Big Boy Careers after pro hockey didnât work out for them.
Matthew didnât know what was wrong with him, and he wasnât ready to show that weakness to Blake. He wanted Blake to see what he was good at. So after a half hour of digging through job posts, thinking that forty hours a week seemed like an awful lot, thank you very much, he moved on.
What was he good at? Well, he hopped in the shower quick and washed his hair. He made his hair look somewhere halfway between sleek and fluffy with Ninaâs borrowed hair dryer, then headed into Blakeâs bedroom. It was bright out, the middle of the day, and if he knew anything about his usefulness, it was that Blake appreciated his um, nude form. And he was happy to put it to use.
There was a technique to this that he hadnât fully busted out yet, mostly favoring mirror selfies or afterthought photos when he was already halfway through jerking off. But he figured now that Blake was his official boyfriend, he could put a little effort into it.
